What is Permanent Jewelry?
Permanent jewelry is any piece of jewelry that is welded together rather than being secured by a hook or clasp. Typically, the term refers to bracelets and anklets, but you can also find permanent rings and necklaces. Bracelets are currently the most popular style of permanent jewelry.
How does permanent jewelry work?
The process is simple, fast and painless. First, you’ll pick out the chain you want. A professional jeweler will measure out a length of chain to fit your wrist, ankle, neck or finger, depending on what type of jewelry you are getting. They will then put a protective barrier, such as a piece of fabric.
Using a small jewelry welder, your jeweler will quickly weld the the chain together with a small jump ring. You will likely hear a ‘zap’ and see a flash of light, but you won’t feel anything. The welding tools will not touch your skin at any point.
Why get permanent jewelry?
People may decide to get permanent jewelry for many different reasons. Think of it like a grown-up version of a friendship bracelet: it’s a great way to keep a reminder of someone special close to your heart. Some people get it to commemorate a special event, like a birthday, anniversary, or graduation. Others get it as part of a group activity, such as a bachelorette party.
While it’s common to get permanent jewelry with family members, friends, or other loved ones, plenty of people get it on their own, too! You can mark a special occasion on your own, or show yourself some love by investing in a hassle-free piece of beautiful jewelry. It’s a fun, easy, and affordable way to celebrate the little things that make life special.
What are our chains made of?
Our chains are made of 14k gold, 14k white gold, and gold-filled – meaning they are durable for everyday wear and can last a lifetime. Alexandra Grey does not carry any sterling silver, enamel, stainless steel, or gold plated chains due to the risk of the chains turning colors and flaking/chipping.
What is gold-filled?
Gold-filled jewelry is made by mechanically bonding solid gold to a base metal, often sterling silver or brass. The gold layer is significant, and is permanently bonded to the base metal with pressure and intense heat. Because of this permanence, you won’t get any flaking or peeling. If taken care of, gold-filled jewelry can last as long as solid gold.
How do I remove the chain?
If you need to remove the chain for any reason, you can simply use a pair of fingernail clippers, pliers, or scissors to cut the jump ring – or cut a chain link. We do offer re-welding once for free, and any additional time for a $15 fee.
What if my chain breaks?
Our chains are made of high-quality materials meant to resist everyday wear and tear, yet dainty enough to come off for safety’s sake. Permanent jewelry does not mean indestructible jewelry, it just means the piece is clasp-less. Any piece of jewelry is susceptible to damage when met with opposing force. If your piece gets snagged or it breaks, we will do our best to repair it for you. Please note, we do not replace, reimburse or refund for lost chains.
Do you repair permanent pieces purchased elsewhere?
In most cases, yes. We charge a $15 repair fee. At Alexandra Grey, we carefully select the chains we offer for quality and appropriate use for permanent jewelry. For this reason, we may decline to repair sterling silver, stainless steel or plated gold or enamel pieces purchased elsewhere.
Can I wear it in the shower, pool, ocean, etc??
Of course – That’s the fun of jewelry you never have to take off! Our chains are meant to go through all of life’s fun adventures with you. While it’s common to get permanent jewelry with family members, friends, or other loved ones, plenty of people get it on their own, too!
